S. Sayyid holds a Chair in Social Theory and Decolonial Thought at the University of Leeds, and is Senior Research Associate at Al-Sharq. Previously, Sayyid was Professor and the inaugural director of the International Centre of Muslim and non-Muslim Understanding, in Australia. As centre director Sayyid made a film entitled Everything You wanted To Know about Muslims But Were Afraid to Ask and worked with the Australia Day Council to develop a schema for an annual national Award for Muslim and Non-Muslim Understanding. His work has been translated into over half dozen languages, and he is a frequent and regular contributor to international and national media. His recent publications include A Fundamental Fear: Eurocentrism and the Emergence of Islamism (1997), a book despite being banned by the Malaysian government is now in its third edition. He co-authored Thinking through Islamophobia (2010) and his most recent book Recalling The Caliphate: Decolonization and World Order (2015). Sayyid is also the founding editor of an interdisciplinary academic journal ReOrient. His research has led to opportunities to brief government official and contribute to national and international media.
